Eco Hotel Sri Lanka | Green Philosophy | Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara

SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM

The Solar Photovoltaic Systems (PV) System installed at Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara is a hybrid system having both off-grid and on-grid capabilities. The off-grid part of the system consists of a standard battery bank connected to the hotels garden lighting while the on-grid part of the system is connected to the national grid via a net metering agreement with the local authorities. During the day, the solar panels will initially top up the charge level of the batteries. Once completed, the excess generated power will be sent to the grid. The plant capacity is 3.5 kW, producing approximately 4,500 kWh annually. This is the first hybrid system in the country and also the first hotel to have a net metering connection.

SOLAR HOT WATER SYSTEM

Hot water at Heritance Ayurveda Maha Gedara is produced via a steam heat exchanger. The solar hot water system is used to augment the temperature of the supply water to the heat exchanger. This reduces the steam consumption by the heat exchanger and invariably reduces the furnace oil consumption by the boiler. The system saves approximately 1,000 litres of furnace oil annually.

BIOGAS PLANT

The Biogas plant is utilizing kitchen garbage as the primary source for the production of biogas which is utilized in the herbal preparation area. The biogas is also used to light up the back area pathway and herbal preparation area using petromax lamps. As the hotel is an ayurvedic hotel, the wet garbage produced is comparatively low when compared to a normal hotel. An estimated 100kg of waste is generated per day producing approximately 38m3 of biogas having 65% Methane content. The effluent from the system is rich in nutrient and is utilized as a fertilizer.

Cashing on the Sun: Financial attractiveness of On-grid Solar PV and Thermal projects in India

www.browneandmohan.com/file5.pdf

From project finance perspective, following ratios are useful to evaluate the viability of the solar power projects.
Average Debt service coverage ratio (ADSCR): is a good measure to estimate the available cash flows during a particular
period to services the debt obligation during the given period. An ideal ADSCR is 2x the cash flows.
Loan life coverage ratio (LLCR):  measures the cash flows available during the loan period that can service the outstanding
debt obligations. Higher the ratio is better.
Project life coverage ratio (PLCR): measures the cash flows available during the life of the project that can service the
outstanding debt obligations.  For lenders this is a useful measure, higher the ratio better it is.

Indian Renewable Energy Outlook on 2012

panchabuta.files.wordpress.com/2012/11/panchabuta_india_renewable_energy_outlook.pdf

Solar is resembling a new glam-girl in Bollywood. State after state is announcing its policy and developers are
busy making plans against the sudden opening up of opportunities. And the next phase of the National Solar
Mission is just about to, well, dawn.
It is against this backdrop that various stakeholders are thirsting for knowledge, backgrounds, insights, projections, data - completely untainted by commercial considerations.
This handbook is the result of Panchabuta’s initiative to put such knowledge into the hands of stakeholders. And
this is only the first of a series of such issues that will be on the table once every six months.

Solar Power Graphs to Make You Smile - CleanTechnica

Solar Power Graphs to Make You Smile

Solar power in some markets is already cost-competitive with power from fossil fuels or nuclear energy. It’s expected to take over more and more markets in the very near future as its costs continue to decline and the costs of other antiquated energy sources continue to rise.
–> For more on solar than is in this post, check out our Solar Power page, which we continuously update.
Nuclear, coal, even natural gas — even if you don’t take into account externalities (public health, environmental, and national security externalities that you really should take into account), probably won’t be competitive with solar soon (marking important crossovers in the history of our planet).

Components  of  a  PV  system
The solar energy conversion into electricity takes place in a semiconductor device that
is called a solar cell. A solar cell is a unit that delivers only a certain amount of electrical
power. In order to use solar electricity for practical devices, which require a particular voltage
or current for their operation, a number of solar cells have to be connected together to form a
solar panel, also called a PV module. For large-scale generation of solar electricity the solar
panels are connected together into a solar array.
The solar panels are only a part of a complete PV solar system. Solar modules are the
heart of the system and are usually called the power generators. One must have also
mounting structures to which PV modules are fixed and directed towards the sun. For PV
systems that have to operate at night or during the period of bad weather the storage of energy
is required, the batteries for electricity storage are needed. The output of a PV module
depends on sunlight intensity and cell temperature; therefore components that condition the
DC (direct current) output and deliver it to batteries, grid, and/or load are required for a
smooth operation of the PV system. These components are referred to as charge regulators.
For applications requiring AC (alternating current) the DC/AC inverters are implemented in
PV systems. These additional components form that part of a PV system that is called balance
of system (BOS). Finally, the household appliances, such as radio or TV set, lights and
equipment being powered by the PV solar system are called electrical load. The elements of a
PV system are schematically presented in Figure 9.1.        more ........

ABSTRACT: T-Solar Global is the biggest PV electricity producer in Spain. At the end of 2008 T-Solar has an  installed power of 143 MW in 28 large ground mounted systems all over Spain. The module technology of these  plants is crystalline silicon from different suppliers. The majority of the systems are static devices and only 2.4 % of  the power is installed with trackers. The grid connected systems are permanently remote monitored in a centralized  control center located in Madrid. This monitoring provides a continuous follow up of the system performance and a  real time failure control. The operation results of the 28 systems during one full year will be presented. PV Trackers  will be compared with the results obtained on static systems of similar technology and location. Also the superior  behavior of an a-Si plant against c-Si plants is shown. T-Solar’s experience proves that ground mounted PV systems  can be efficiently planned and executed in a short  time and demonstrates that additional investment on real time  monitoring systems can be recovered in a short period of time. The operation experience also provides  clues for  further improvement of large ground mounted PV systems.

Westmill Solar, a 5 megawatt PV farm sited between Swindon and Oxford, is one of the largest arrays in the UK. It was built a year ago to profit from the high feed-in tariffs then available to large PV installations. Adam Twine, the farmer on whose land the 21,000 panels were sited, kept a right to buy back the solar farm from its original financiers. Twine is an enthusiast for community ownership and recently set up a cooperative to purchase the whole array. Small investors can apply to buy shares now, with local residents given priority. If successful, the new cooperative will be the biggest community owned solar farm in the world.

LED lantern runs on saltwater

LED lantern runs on saltwater

The 1.5 volts of DC power produced by the lantern is enough to run its ten-LED white light, which puts out 55 lumens of light. The lantern also includes a USB port to charge devices at 4.5 volts. The GH-LED10WBW runs for eight hours before the saltwater needs replacing, and the magnesium rod lasts 120 hours.
Marketed as an emergency lantern or for use aboard boats, it’s scheduled to go on sale in mid-September. No price has been announced

Solar-powered oven makes fresh water

Solar-powered oven makes fresh water
Sometimes the simplest ideas are the best. Concerned about the lack of fresh water in the developing world, designer Gabriele Diamanti wanted a solution to desalinate water that was available to households rather than relying on giant, centralized plants. He also wanted it to be something inexpensive that could be made by local craftsman. The result is a ceramic solar still called the Eliodomestico that operates like an “upside-down coffee percolator”.

As you may have noticed in the story on the huge NREL study just published showing that 80% of US electricity could easily come from renewable sources, concentrating solar thermal power (CSP) would play a big part in that. But would such clean technology run into problematic material constraints…

On-Grid vs. Off-Grid Solar Power Systems

On-Grid vs. Off-Grid Solar Power Systems: "Many times, when people want a solar power system installed, there is a misunderstanding of what it means to be on-grid versus off-grid. A lot of times we hear people say they want to be “off the grid” thinking that is what it means to go solar. What they really mean is that they want to reduce their energy usage, but don’t realize you can do it and still be tied to the grid. On-grid systems stay connected to your power lines which are run by your utility company whereas off-grid ones only rely on the solar system and batteries."
